Our clients in West Kirby approached us to design a garden they could truly enjoy throughout their retirement.
While the space had generous proportions, it was dominated by a large mature tree that cast deep shade and made growing conditions challenging. As a result, the garden had remained largely untouched since they moved in.
With full schedules and a desire for simplicity, they wanted a garden that felt both welcoming and beautiful – but one that could be maintained with minimal effort. Privacy was also a key consideration, as the elevated position of the property meant neighbouring windows looked directly into the space.

Rather than treating the mature tree as a limitation, we designed the garden around it as a natural focal point. By carefully lifting the crown, we allowed more light to filter through the space, improving both planting conditions and the overall atmosphere.
A main paved terrace runs along the width of the house, creating a generous seating and entertaining area that all doors open onto – a natural extension of the home into the garden.
From here, a softly curving pathway leads to a second, more secluded paved space, where a gazebo provides welcome shade from the sun and a quiet escape from nesting birds in the tree above.
A slatted timber fence wraps the perimeter of the garden, bringing a sense of cohesion while screening neighbouring properties and enhancing privacy.
A shade- and drought-tolerant lawn, supported by an integrated irrigation system, introduces colour and softness to the space and creates a safe, welcoming area for visiting grandchildren to play.
Practical storage is provided by a new shed, carefully positioned to keep the garden looking tidy and uncluttered throughout the year. Evergreen planting weaves through the design, offering structure, subtle seasonal variation, and year-round interest.
Tucked discreetly into the planting, a small spherical water feature adds a gentle, soothing soundtrack to the garden – reinforcing the calm, reflective character of the space.
The result is a peaceful, low-maintenance garden that feels considered and comfortable – a space designed to support both relaxed daily living and the quieter pleasures of retirement.
