Garden Design and Build Pricing

What Does a High-Quality Garden Really Cost?

One of the first questions clients ask us is simple and entirely reasonable:

“How much does a garden like this cost?”

The honest answer is that garden builds vary widely depending on size, specification and site conditions. However, transparency matters. Below, we share real-world investment ranges from completed projects, along with clear explanations of what influences cost, so you can assess whether we are the right fit before taking the next step.

Why Garden Prices Vary

The Factors Most Clients Don’t See at First

Many of the biggest cost drivers in a garden build are not the visible features. They sit beneath the surface and behind the scenes, shaping how the garden performs long after completion.

Access

Access is one of the first things we assess.

We consider:

  • Steps, slopes and level changes
  • Widths and turning space for machinery
  • Distance from delivery point to garden

Restricted access often increases labour time and may require specialist solutions such as craning materials or installing temporary scaffold platforms.

Deliveries and Logistics

Efficient bulk deliveries can reduce handling time and cost. On restricted sites, materials may need to be delivered in smaller quantities and transported manually, increasing labour input.

Waste Removal

Garden rebuilds generate significant waste. Excavated soil, old paving, walls and vegetation can easily exceed 30 tonnes on an average project.

Key considerations include:

  • How close skips or grab lorries can get
  • Space for temporary waste storage

The further waste must be moved, the greater the labour requirement.

Foundations

Quality gardens are built from the ground up.

Proper groundwork involves:

  • Excavation
  • Importing hardcore, sand and cement
  • Creating stable, long-lasting bases

These elements are invisible once complete, but they are essential for preventing movement, cracking and failure over time.

Drainage

Poor drainage can undermine even the most beautiful garden.

Solutions may include:

  • Adjusting levels and falls
  • Installing land or channel drains
  • Improving soil structure

Effective drainage protects paving, planting and usability year-round.

Materials and Specification

Material choices have a major impact on cost.

  • Paving alone can range from £25 to £125+ per square metre
  • Installation, foundations and skilled labour are additional
  • Younger planting offers better value and matures over time
  • Mature specimens increase upfront cost but deliver instant impact

The right balance depends on priorities and long-term expectations.

Garden Design Fees

A well-planned garden starts with a considered design.

Typical design investment

  • £2,000 including VAT for gardens up to 200m²
  • Fees are adjusted for smaller courtyards or larger estates

If you proceed with the build, £1,000 of the design fee is credited towards your final project cost.

Design service includes

  • Detailed site survey and consultation
  • Bespoke concept design
  • Material and planting recommendations
  • Design revisions
  • 3D video walkthrough

What This Means for You

  • You gain clarity on realistic investment levels early
  • You understand what drives cost, not just what looks good
  • You avoid surprises during the build
  • Your garden is designed and constructed to last

This level of planning is what protects your investment and ensures your garden performs as beautifully in five or ten years as it does on completion day.
