Transforming a Disjointed Garden into a Functional Family Space in Formby

Our clients in Formby approached us with a common dilemma: their garden simply wasn’t working for their family. The existing layout felt disjointed, lacking functionality and cohesion. The small paved areas, rotten decking, poorly placed trees, and a lack of connection between different spaces meant the garden wasn’t meeting their needs.

Project Brief

The clients envisioned a garden that would not only be aesthetically pleasing but also functional. Their brief included:

  • A comfortable seating area, possibly with a cover
  • An outdoor kitchen and dining space
  • A more usable layout
  • A low-maintenance planting scheme
  • A comprehensive lighting scheme

Design Solution

We undertook a comprehensive redesign to transform the garden into a harmonious outdoor living space.

  1. Paved Area & Zoning: We proposed a large, beautifully paved area featuring different types of paving to define distinct zones. This created a clear layout while enhancing the overall flow of the garden.
  2. Louvred Pergola: A stylish louvred pergola was designed over the seating area, allowing the clients to adjust the cover based on weather conditions. This feature ensured year-round usability and comfort.
  3. Outdoor Kitchen & Gazebo: We introduced a timber gazebo that housed a premium Grillo kitchen, complete with a bar, gas BBQ, pizza oven, and fridge, making it the perfect space for outdoor entertaining.
  4. Composite Decking: To replace the original rotted timber, we installed composite decking, providing durability and low maintenance.
  5. Low-Maintenance Planting Scheme: The planting scheme was carefully selected to require minimal upkeep while ensuring vibrant blooms, creating a garden that’s as beautiful as it is functional.
  6. Lighting Scheme: To enhance the garden’s ambiance, we implemented a comprehensive lighting scheme. Festoon lighting was strung throughout the pergola and gazebo for a warm, inviting glow. Additional fence lights created a cosy atmosphere, while spotlights highlighted feature planting, showcasing the garden’s beauty at night. All lighting can be conveniently controlled via the clients’ mobile phones, allowing them to set the mood with ease.

The redesigned garden has become a true extension of the clients’ home. With designated areas for relaxation, cooking, and dining, the family can now enjoy their outdoor space to its fullest. The combination of practical features, a low-maintenance landscape, and a striking lighting scheme has not only enhanced the garden’s usability but also its aesthetic appeal.
